Burning Man is a unique annual festival, a temporary metropolis dedicated to community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance.. It is the crucible of creativity, a festival where the people are not simply “attendees,” but rather active participants in every sense of the word: they create the city, the interaction, the art, the performance and ultimately the experience that is Burning Man.
This year was my first burn, travelling from the UK and enduring countless hours of preparation and I was finally on the Playa. I was overwhelmed with not only how stunning the dry lake bed environment was but also the challenges I faced while enduring the dust storms and sometimes bitter cold nights as well as scorching hot days however what I remember most is the sheer vast amounts of creativity… I believe there is more of it per square foot than anywhere else on Earth, and the energy it creates among the people is infectious. You can truly live moment to moment at Burning Man and radical self expression is accepted as normal. These are a few moments captured through my lens, hope you enjoy.

For five years, Eric Schwabel has been strapping 4800 watts of lighting gear onto his body and photographing Black Rock City citizens in the intense glow. It makes for some fantastic photos.

An art car, or more accurately, a mutant vehicle can be anything its designers imagine within the liscencing criteria of the Department of Mutant Vehicles. Burning Man’s DMV insists that mutant vehicles be radically and safely modified from a discernible street standard vehicle. There are dragons, pirate ships and mighty zeppelins. Some are massive sound stages capable of dominating everything around them. Others offer an unusual interactive experience for their riders, like giving standing ovations to the creative citizens of Black Rock City. Some vehicles are playa-famous and stunningly ostentatious. Others are simple little furry things that coast along the desert floor. Whatever the design, these motorized creations capture our imagination.
Gorgeously intricate gallery. Heff writes:
“Just wanted to share some of the wonderful sights I managed to capture at Burning Man this year. The experience always recharges my creative batteries and leaves me reinvigorated for another year.”

Here’s a cool, small gallery from Jared Mechaber that’s a good mix of everyday playa life and weirdo surrealism. We aren’t sure which side we like better. Jared writes:
“With the eye of a 15 year veteran of Black Rock City, I have posted 75 of my best ‘moments’ of life on the Caravansary Playa.”
Check it out on Jared’s website.
Watch this Caravansary slideshow. Just watch it and remember how much warmer it was those few short months ago.
